HMP Whatton is one within a long series of projects undertaken by Caledonian for HM Prison Service.
The project involved a major expansion of an existing prison, constructing new facilities on a green field site and integrating further combined facilities with the existing prison. In overview this provided:-
- 408 new prison places.
- A 1000 inmate kitchen serving existing and new accommodation.
- visitors centre, sports hall, gatehouse, reception, education and workshop buildings
- All security, fencing, services and external works to complete the turn key project.
The gross internal floor area of the development is 16,583m2.
Additionally the project included a number of sustainability initiatives to support the Custodial Property environmental policy, such as rainwater harvesting and extremely high thermal performance standards, and the buildings achieved BREEAM Excellent standard.
A significant factor in the success at HMP Whatton was the project implementation process. Caledonian acted as Constructor and Design Team Leader, managing the overall project from concept with close integration with the Ministry of Justice Custodial Property team.
A high degree of collaboration was achieved between all parties including the Client Team, consultants and Caledonian’s Supply Chain. Several of Caledonian’s key suppliers were adopted as partners to the main PPC 2000 contract ensuring close levels of involvement from the earliest stages.
This project clearly demonstrates Caledonian’s capabilities in design, major construction and overall project management and delivery of a fully integrated multi million pound turnkey package. A range of “safer cell” fit outs are also included in the modular construction.
