Leeds City Council

Number of modules – 20

With four schools identified as priorities in the management of the ‘bulge’ in school numbers, the Council, in partnership with the LEP and their partners, began the process of ensuring that adequate school facilities were in place for the new pupil intake in September.

With a 30% increase in the primary school intake, Leeds City Council needed to act swiftly to add additional classroom space to their primary school network.

With four schools identified as priorities in the management of the ‘bulge’ in school numbers, the Council, in partnership with the LEP and their partners, began the process of ensuring that adequate school facilities were in place for the new pupil intake in September.

The requirements were outlined as:

  • Talbot Primary School: Double classrooms with associated cloakroom, storage and WC facilities.
  • St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School: Two storey classroom development.
  • Allerton C of E Primary School: New classroom and extension to the Hall.
  • Bramham Primary School: Double classroom and foyer extension.

All of the developments required permanent classroom solutions and Caledonian had recently completed several projects for the North West Primary Schools Building Programme.

Caledonian partnered with an Architects practice in Leeds to provide a standardised approach to the construction of the new classrooms.

Working on a turnkey basis Caledonian commenced the initial groundworks in June and the factory began to manufacture the modular sections during July. The project also involved a schedule of internal refurbishment works including upgrading services, breaking through and making good when linking to the existing school buildings.

The permanent classrooms were ready for full hand-over in advance of the new term start date. This represents a six month total programme from initial meeting to final hand-over of all schemes including; school consultations, full site surveys, planning, complete design, manufacture, and install.

Sarah Richards, Executive Head Teacher at Bramham Primary comments “I have been absolutely delighted with the Caledonian product. The feedback from children, staff and parents mirror this; the building has been erected to a high quality which has provided for our children a fantastic learning environment which works well within the space of our grounds.”
