RAF Leconfield, Medical Centre

Caledonian provided a sixteen-bay modular structure over two storeys with a complex six module link structure to attach the building to the existing facility.

Due to the need for level access from existing buildings, Caledonian designed the ground and first floor module structures to mimic floor and ceiling heights in the existing building and provide a level threshold at both levels

This required some detailed engineering work, particularly in the ceiling of the ground floor, to ensure that ceiling heights were maintained whilst not compromising the internal space.

Initially the ground floor was designed as an open plan area to be fitted out at a later date but due to the benefits of offsite construction, the fit out programme for this element of works was actually included in the factory build and the treatment rooms and consulting areas were all factory fitted along with the pharmacy and the plant rooms.

The first floor facility included two four bed and four single bed en-suite rooms along with a patient day room and kitchen and nurse station and office.

Facilities included full medical provision including sluice and utility rooms as well as bath and linen stores.

The link way was an unusual shape, including one module with a slanted end and included staircase, with  disabled refuge space, lift and motor room.

Externally the appearance of the building was designed to mirror the other buildings on the site and meet planning guidelines as well as complying with CTM requirements of JSP 440.

The external skin therefore was comprised a single leaf external brickwork applied onto a strip footing and tied back to the main building structure. The other external feature of note is the mono pitch roof which was actually manufactured within the module structure in the factory meaning the time and cost of the roof structure was significantly reduced on-site and within the factory environment. The use of a mono pitch roof also offered significant opportunity for services distribution within the roof void as at the high end there was nearly a one metre ceiling void providing significant space for service distribution.
