Sir Frederick Gibberd College

As the first place contractor on the Department for Education (DfE) component schools framework Caledonian were awarded this 1700 place 8FE school with 500 place sixth form in Harlow, Essex.  Undertaken as a full turnkey contact including demolition of the existing Passmore Academy this is the first project to be allocated by direct award by the DfE through their modular frameworks and the largest free school ever to be awarded.

At 12,460m2 it comprises all teaching spaces required to deliver a full through school curriculum  as well as a separate sports block also available for community use. Manufactured using large 18m x 3.5m modules with factory installed concrete floors, the rooms have a premanufactured value (PMV) of 91% with internal fit out and external cladding installed in the factory.

The scheme had some significant challenges through the planning and preconstruction period and Caledonian were awarded their prestigious “Collaboration on the component framework” award in recognition of our approach to helping them overcome these challenges.
